What Is Consent, Really?

Many people misunderstand what real consent truly means. It is never a one-time promise, nor an assumed obligation, and definitely not forced compromise.

True consent is active, voluntary and willing agreement from both sides. It needs clear communication, rather than silent acceptance. No one should feel pressured, forced or uneasy in intimate interactions.

1. Consent can be withdrawn at any time
No matter when during the process, anyone has the right to stop immediately. You do not need to make excuses or feel guilty. Respecting each other’s temporary hesitation is the most basic protection.

2. Silence never equals agreement
Not refusing does not mean willing. Hesitation, passive cooperation and no response all stand for disagreement. Only clear, positive and willing reply counts as effective consent.

3. Consent is needed every single time
Even long-term partners still need mutual confirmation every time. Good intimate relationship is built on repeated respect and understanding, not habitual perfunctory.

Healthy intimacy always comes with equal status, clear boundaries and sincere willingness. Learning to understand consent is the first step to protect yourself and cherish your lover.
